The Sanilac County Board of Commission met Tuesday afternoon, discussing a variety of issues including the return of students to county schools this fall and how it will look.
Commissioner Jon Block said he had been in touch with Sanilac County Health Director Bryant Wilkie regarding the use of facemasks by students and staff.
Although at least two districts have publicly said they will not be enforcing the use of masks, Commissioner Block pointed out Wilkie encourages all districts to have a contingency plan, should an outbreak occur.
There are also plans in place to not quarantine a large portion of classes or students for a single c ase of COVID-19, rather be able to minimize the exposure.
Ultimately, Commissioners agreed the local school boards have the final say how a district will handle COVID-19 related issues and any other information presented is a recommendation only.
In other Commission news, Commissioner Bill Sarkella said he attended meetings in Port Sanilac and Sanilac Township and learned discussions continue between Port Sanilac and the Sanilac East Fire Authority regarding the fire department equipment.
Commissioners also say blight is an issue in several of their townships with questions of how to best enforce it if there is no Enforcement Officer. Controller/Administrator Tara Griffith told the Board that planning is underway for work on the new fiscal year budget and a notice has been sent to department heads for input.
Finally, Commissioner Roger Ballard reports all three County Parks are operating at full capacity every weekend with multiple requests for any available lots.
There have been preliminary talks between Lexington Township and the Lexington County Campgrounds regarding the possible installation of water lines to the campgrounds.
