Crews race to get Dawson Street done before the fair

UPDATE: As of 2:30 p.m. Thursday, paving crews were nearly finished with the base coat of asphalt on Dawson Street. Flagmen were working at the intersection of Dawson, Maple Valley and Sanilac Ave as large asphalt paving trucks crossed the roadways to deliver loads of the new road surface. Sandusky DPW crews say water will be applied to the asphalt at the intersection of Argyle and Dawson Streets, near the fairgrounds, to help the asphalt cure. Work is still expected to be completed prior to the Sanilac County Fair that kicks-off Sunday.

(SANILAC COUNTY) – After several weeks of rebuilding Dawson Street in Sandusky, asphalt is being laid Thursday, just days before the start of the Sanilac County Fair.
Work had come to a halt earlier in the week, after an asphalt plant had been struck by lightening and knocked it out of commission for a few days.
During the work, Dawson Street had infrastructure work done, including new sewer and water lines along with new curb, gutters and sidewalks.
The road has been closed to traffic and local businesses while motorists were forced to use an alternate detour route. Dawson Street is expected to be re-opened to traffic by the weekend and the new asphalt work will be tested, with a high volume of car and truck traffic.
Following the completion of the Dawson Street project, workers will move to South Sandusky Road, beginning at Miller Road just south of Sandusky.
M-19 will have the top layer of asphalt milled off with a new overlay application put down from Miller to French Line Road.
The project is estimated to cost around $465,000 dollars.
