While solar farms continue to be a viable option for some when they search for alternative energy sources, some entities in Sanilac County continue to work out the foundation of allowing a potential solar farm. Planning Commission members and Township Board members of Watertown Township have been dealing with the issue of solar energy for the past several months. A proposed 1,000 acre development south of Sandusky, that would cost in excess of $180 million dollars, is being proposed by Samsung Corporation. If approved, it would generate enough power to service 30,000 homes annually. Township officials continue their work on finalizing a plan for solar powered projects to present to the Township Board for a final decision. Among the topics of discussion has been the distance of setback property. Should the Samsung project be allowed to proceed, it would mean millions of dollars of revenue for the county, township and school district. Both the Planning Commission and Township Board will meet in September to further discuss the solar issue.
