The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday afternoon
and heard an update on how their financial support is being used. MSU District Director Jerry Johnson is responsible for oversight of the Extension and 4-H program in Sanilac County, along with several other counties.
Johnson told the Board 4-H has been around in Sanilac County for over 100 years and currently has nearly 600 youth involved in various programs.
According to Johnson, over $141,000 dollars is spent in Sanilac County as a result of 4-H programs, including the annual County Fair.
There are currently 58 youth that have been a part of the Sanilac County 4-H program and are currently enrolled at Michigan State University.
Local 4-H Coordinator Colleen Wallace told the Board she has an army of over 300 volunteers involved in 4-H, along with over 30 others who serve as Superintendents in various departments.
Board members conveyed to Johnson that they encourage funding given to the 4-H, more so than the MSU Extension special services including Ag specialists in crops and livestock.
