(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Fire departments from multiple St. Clair County agencies responded to a senior citizen complex in Algonac Thursday afternoon, after fire broke out in the complex.
Around two dozen residents were able to escape the blaze at their housing complex just before noon Thursday, with some being helped out by first responders.
The fire at a Rolling Brook Senior Living building on Fruit Street was fully engulfed, forcing residents to seek shelter. St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King said all residents were able to evacuate.
Fire personnel say the fire started outside the main entrance in or near a garbage can and the cause is under investigation.
According to accounts from on the scene, firefighters had to break windows to free some residents from the building, but no injuries to residents were reported. One firefighter suffered a minor injury.
A spokesperson from the St. Clair County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said a school bus had been brought to the scene for residents as families worked to find emergency shelter.
It was also reported the Algonac Lions Club opened their hall for temporary shelter during the fire.
Firefighters from Algonac, Clay Township, Kimball Township, Marine City, Marysville, Port Huron, Port Huron Township and St. Clair responded to the scene.
