Freighters runs aground near Blue Water Bridge

(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Late night visitors along the mouth of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, just north
of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron had quite a shock just before midnight. A Great Lakes freighter ran aground near the former Dunn Paper Company, just north of the bridge before midnight Thursday.
Officials say the 678-foot long steamship Wilfred Sykes ran aground while attempting to navigate the fast-flowing currents of where Lake Huron and the St. Clair River meet.
A video camera mounted atop the Blue Water Convention Center caught the incident on tape as the vessel seemed to lose control of it’s steering while heading south, sharply veering to the west and going aground on a sandbar.
The freighter was later freed a short time, with the help of tug boats and was reported to have anchored for the evening to check for any possible damage.
U.S. Coast Guard officials have said the vessel experienced a mechanical issue and no damage was reported to the freighter.
