The Sanilac Board of Commissioners has been gathering and studying information regarding a new county facility for the Animal Control Center, knowing something needs to be done in the near future.
Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Nick Lusher has provided quotes for architectural and engineering services for a potential new facility, with five bids being received.
In an email to the Board, Lusher suggested funding for the project could come from the County’s allotment from the ARPA fund.
Booms Construction of Huron County was the lowest of five bidders, at a cost of just over $85,000 dollars. According to the bid document from Booms, the proposed facility would be a 62 x 90 foot facility covering 5,000 square feet.
It’s estimated the entire project would cost up to $1.5 million dollars with 18 dog kennels, each with an indoor/outdoor access.
The projected building would also accommodate up to 25 cages forming a cat condo, as well as a one bay sally port where animals would be brought in and off-loaded.
While Boom’s bid was the lowest at $85,025 the other bids were higher, including the highest bid of $139,000 dollars. Commissioners are expected to discuss the topic Tuesday.
John Moody, Administrator of the Sanilac County Jail was also on the agenda to address his request to the Board of Commission at the bi-weekly meeting Tuesday afternoon, asking for a Guardian Property Room Expander which basically is a vacuum sealer product.
If allowed to purchase the device, Moody says it will greatly reduce the amount of storage space that is currently being used for inmates personal property.
Currently, inmate’s personal property is stored in a mesh bag, taking up a great deal of space, according to Moody.
The Administrator is asking Commissioners for approval of the equipment, at a cost of just under $23,000.
The funding source would be from the inmate commissary fund, Moody explained.
