(SANILAC COUNTY) – The City of Croswell has re-opened the portion of Howard Ave. that was closed earlier in the day, to allow for demolition work. Crews began tearing down two buildings that were destroyed in a major downtown fire on June 5th.
Two businesses, including what was once known as the former Ed’s Bakery and Antonio’s Sub Shop, were destroyed in the five-alarm blaze. Five people were trapped in the burning building and rescued by police and civilians using a ladder and a pickup to reach the second story window.
City Manager Dave Tait said in the interest of public safety, a decision was made to close North Howard Ave, between Ward St and Wells St beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting until the buildings were down.
City officials sent out a notice around 2 p.m. that N. Howard was once again opened. City officials say the buildings were determined to be a total loss and the property owner was having them demolished for safety reasons.
Tait said there are no pending development plans for the property that will sit vacant for the time being.
