(SANILAC COUNTY) – Plans continue to move forward with the potential use of the old K-Mart building on the west side of Sandusky.
City Manager Dave Faber said a Planning Commission was recently held to discuss the purchase of the building and two lots in front, near M-46.
Faber said Storage of America is working to complete the purchase transaction and if all goes well, the city coffers will receive a shot in the arm from the collection of property taxes.
The city is awaiting the final purchase paperwork and Faber said all approvals given by the Commission and City are contingent on the sale of the property being successfully completed.
According to the city manager, the company is intending to purchase the 80,000 square foot K-Mart portion of the sprawling building and use it for climate-controlled indoor storage units.
Plans also call for a small retail store on the property where small packing and shipping items would be available.
Faber said the climate-controlled feature would be the only one of it’s kind in this immediate area.
Once all transactions are completed and the business opens, Faber said there will be $38,000 dollars of tax collection with the city’s share being $12,000 dollars annually.
The two lots out front near M-46 could be zoned for retail business, similar to the Burger King located on the corner of Gates and West Sanilac.
