A large crowd was in attendance at the Sanilac County Board of Commission meeting Tuesday afternoon as County officials and family congratulated longtime employee Paula Messing who is retiring. (SANILAC COUNTY) – Following action taken by the Sanilac County Board of Commission, a new roof will be placed on the County’s Recycling Center facility, replacing an aging roof that has caused extensive damage to equipment inside the facility.

Sanilac County Buildings and Grounds Director Nick Lusher told the Board although temporary, short term repairs had been made, it was imperative that a entire new roof be placed on the facility.

Lusher said he had sought bids for the repairs with five companies looking at the job and three placing bids. At their Finance meeting Tuesday afternoon, Commissioners agreed with Lusher’s recommendation to award the work to Zimmer’s Roofing of Port Huron at a cost of $32,600 dollars. Lusher said rain had recently leaked in and caused nearly $2,000 dollars worth of damage to one of the Recycle machines. Marlette Roofing had bid just over $43,000 dollars while Thomas Brown Roofing’s bid was around $44,800 dollars. The work on the repairs on the roof are expected to get started as soon as the weather allows.

At a recent Board of Commission meeting, Sanilac Commissioners had agreed to move the issue of purchasing four SUV patrol units for the Sheriff Department on to the full board for a final vote. The department had recommended and the Board agreed, that the bid from Signature Ford of Owosso at just over $150,000 for the four vehicles would be accepted.

However, at their regular meeting Tuesday afternoon, Commissioners had a change of heart. Local businessman Dave Tubbs had conversations with Sheriff Paul Rich and Board members in regards to trying to keep business local when possibly. At Tuesday’s meeting, Commissioner Joel Wyatt suggested the Board has latitude to choose the bid they wish and felt it was important to do business local.

Wyatt told the board and audience that by purchasing locally, “we would be keeping money local, supporting those who work local and I just think it’s a good idea to reconsider this issue and try to work with local dealerships.” After further discussion, including comments from Sheriff Rich who pointed out the difference in money from Signature Ford to Tubbs Bros. was minimal and recommended to buy local, the Board formally amended their motion, striking Signature Ford as the winning bid and awarding the purchase to Tubbs Bros. of Sandusky.
