Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson is wishing visitors and area residents alike a good Memorial Day weekend, but he reminds everyone to be safe and to take some precautions to avoid a bad holiday weekend experience.
Sheriff Hanson says there are two activities that can lead to problems on Memorial Weekend: boating and fireworks. He reminds people to exercise caution while using fireworks, and also to be mindful of your neighbors. Hanson says every year his department responds to late hour noise complaints and property damage caused by fireworks.
When it comes to boating, Hanson says the forecast for this weekend looks like there will be generally favorable weather conditions for being on the water, but he reminds boaters, and especially kayakers, that this can quickly change with little or no warning. He encourages boaters and kayakers to be prepared: carry a phone with you in a waterproof container, always let somebody know where you’re going and when you plan on returning, and under no circumstances should you venture out onto the water without a life jacket.
Sheriff Hanson says a properly fitted life jacket has been the difference between life and death in many cases that his department has responded to. Last year, Marine Deputies with the Huron County Sheriff Department issued nearly 100 tickets for failure to wear a life jacket. Hanson says loaner life jackets are available at the Bird Creek Beach life jacket station in Port Austin, as well as at the municipal harbor in Caseville.
By following these precautions, Sheriff Hanson says everyone will have a safe and memorable Memorial Day Weekend.
