The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office had an eventful holiday weekend, with a trio of traffic accidents happening since Friday, July 1.
On Friday, July 1, around 6:00 p.m., Sanilac County Dispatch received a report of a two vehicle crash on South Lakeshore Road near Galbraith Line Road in Worth Township. Sanilac County Sheriff Deputies responded alongside Burchville Fire/Rescue, Lexington Fire/Rescue and Croswell EMS, finding a 60-year-old Harper Woods man dead at the scene. Deputies determined that the 60-year-old had been driving west on Galbraith Line Road, east of South Lakeshore Road in his 1999 Saturn SL2 when, for an unknown reason, he pulled out in front of a 2011 Chevy Silverado that was traveling north on South Lakeshore Road. The Silverado’s driver and passenger, a 54-year-old Macomb man and his 10-year-old son signed off with EMS at the scene.
The next day, Saturday, July 2, around 1:30 p.m., deputies responded to another traffic crash on South Lakeshore Road, this time near Aitken Road in Lexington Township. Joining them at the scene were the Lexington Fire Department and Croswell EMS. It was found that a 67-year-old woman from Detroit was driving her 2017 Ford Fusion south on South Lakeshore Road when she misjudged the location of a private driveway she wanted to turn into. This resulted in her remaining half in the northbound lane and half on the road’s east shoulder, into the path of a 2012 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by a 40-year-old Massachusetts man, who was heading north on South Lakeshore road at the time. He attempted to avoid a collision, but by doing so, he became separated from his motorcycle, sliding across the pavement and coming to rest against the Ford Fusion. The biker was taken to Port Huron McLaren Hospital for his injuries via Croswell EMS. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be involved and the biker was wearing his helmet at the time.
On Sunday, July 3, at 11:30 a.m., Sanilac County Sheriff Deputies responded to a traffic crash on Bay City-Forestville Road, near Obee Road in Minden Township. It appears that a 2007 International Semi hauling a 2018 milk tanker was being driven west on Bay City-Forestville Road by a 40 year old Marlette man when he misjudged the speed of the motorcycle driving in front of him and lost control of the semi when he attempted evasive action to avoid a collision. In sparing the motorcycle, the semi overturned in the north ditch, resulting in the Marlette driver being taken to Marlette Regional Hospital by Sanilac EMS for his injuries. Assisting at the scene were the Minden Fire Department, Delaware Township Fire, Sanilac EMS, Sanilac County Emergency Management and the Sanilac County Road Commission.
