Sheriff Kelly Hanson also reported that on Friday, July 8, Janet K. Hoyt, age 62 of Snover, passed away during surgery for her wounds sustained in a car crash about two weeks before.
Ms. Hoyt had been driving her 2006 Ford Escape on Monday, June 27, before 7:00 a.m. when she attempted to turn into a driveway near Thomas Road on M-53. However, by doing so, she had turned into the path of an oncoming truck and trailer, driven by 44-year-old Chad Gilbert of Filion. The only occupant of the 2020 Kenworth truck, Gilbert was unable to avoid impact, and though he was not injured, Hoyt required out-of-county transport by helicopter for further treatment, after being originally taken to McLaren Thumb Hospital by Central Huron Ambulances. The morning sun in her eyes may have been a factor in Ms. Hoyt being unable to see the truck.
Also responding to the scene were the Bad Axe Police, Bad Axe Fire Department, and the Michigan State Police.
