An assistant football coach at Vassar High School has been placed on administrative leave due to an ongoing criminal investigation, the school announcing so in a Facebook post on Wednesday, September 21.
Lawrence McGrandy, age 43 and of Vassar, was arrested on August 27 by the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office, later being charged with first-degree home invasion, malicious destruction of property more than $1000 and aggravated domestic assault.
According to MLive, these charges stem from a complaint filed against him that alleges he broke into a Millington home that an ex-girlfriend was staying at, going on to assault the 30-year-old woman. Also while in the Brown Road residence, McGrandy destroyed property belonging to the 27-year-old homeowner who had been hosting McGrandy’s former partner.
The home invasion and property destruction charges are both felony charges, while the aggravated domestic assault is charged as a misdemeanor, and he faces upwards of 25 years in jail if convicted, as well as the possibility of fines up to $15,500. That is before cost for medical or property damages are considered, which could see McGrandy paying much more.
Vassar High School said that McGrandy is on administrative leave “pending the result of this [legal] investigation.”
He is due before Judge Jason E. Bitzer in Tuscola County District Court on Wednesday, September 28, for his probable cause exam, with the related hearing scheduled for Wednesday, October 5. His bond was set at $8,000, with McGrandy only needing 10% of that to post bond.
