Police have identified the driver involved in the October 20th accident between a car and semi-truck on M-24 in Mayfield Township, which resulted in one death and the road being closed for a few hours of investigation and clean-up.
Officers with the Michigan State Police and the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Lapeer County EMS and Lapeer Fire & Rescue, were dispatched to the North Lapeer Road-Sawdust Corners Road intersection some time after 6:00 p.m.
Investigation found that 54-year-old Andrea Montgomery of Lapeer had been heading east on Sawdust Corners in her 2020 Chevrolet Trax, stopping and then attempting to turn left onto M-24. Instead, she pulled into the path of a southbound semi-truck hauling vegetable oil. The collision sent the car rolling, eventually coming to rest on its wheels south of Sawdust Corners Road on the highway’s west side.
Meanwhile, the semi-truck ended up south of the roads’ intersection by 100 yards, and though the tanker truck was damaged and required towing away from the scene, the truck driver, age 68 and from Ohio, escaped the ordeal uninjured. Unfortunately, Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene after members of Lapeer Fire & Rescue removed her from her vehicle.
Investigation thus far has shown that alcohol and/or drug use are not considered factors in the crash, nor is excessive speed.
