Convicted on three counts of felonious assault, Caro man Damian Meindl was sentenced to 25 years on Tuesday, December 6 for the three stabbings he carried out on October 31, 2021.
Meindl, age 34, was charged as a habitual offender when he was convicted this October of two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and a count assault with intent to maim. However, Meindl’s habitual offender notice requires a minimum sentence of 25 years, despite each count only having a maximum 10 year sentence. In answer to the requirement, Tuscola County Circuit Court Judge Amy Gierhart handed down a prison sentence of 25 to 40 years, with credit for 401 days (a little more than a year and a month) served.
The charges stem from Halloween last year, when Caro Police were dispatched to a Madison Street apartment to find a 65-year-old man and 41-year-old woman covered in cuts. They later responded to a Ludar Road residence, where a 27-year-old man reported also being attacked with Meindl’s knife, with all victims treated at the McLaren Caro Region Hospital.
Meindl was also charged after the attack on six counts of assaulting a police officer via resisting and malicious destruction of property for his actions while being booked at the county jail. No updates are known at this time regarding the booking charges.
