Huron Sheriff: Zero road visibility led to about 20 accidents Friday morning

With westerly winds increasing to nearly 50 mph, visibility on open stretches of road throughout the Thumb has gotten to the point that Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson is urging motorists to stay off the open roads through Saturday morning unless they absolutely have to travel.
Describing the situation as “urgent,” Sheriff Hanson reports that emergency crews are responding to multiple accidents across the Thumb. He reiterates that, with visibility almost zero and roads becoming dangerous and challenging, driving should be out of the question unless it’s an emergency. According to the sheriff, last minute holiday shopping is in fact NOT an emergency, but was an excuse at least one driver gave to rescue crews.
Estimating that around 20 accidents occurred since this morning alone, the sheriff says that a majority of the accidents were non-injury fender-benders or drivers getting stuck in ditches. With officials believing the situation will last through Saturday at least, road crews will remain out, keeping intersections clear and keeping track of the road conditions.
Visibility during this type of weather gets worse into the evening and nighttime hours, so again, if you don’t have to travel today, Sheriff Kelly Hanson asks you to stay safe and stay home.
