A Tuesday afternoon crash in Ohio unfortunately claimed the life of a 69-year-old truck driver from Bad Axe.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that the Bad Axe man, Daniel Gardner, was headed north on I-280 and passing through Ohio’s Lake Township in his Kenworth semi-tractor-trailer on Tuesday, January 17, when tires from another semi truck traveling south on I-280 flew from an axle and struck the semi’s cab, killing Gardner.
Further investigation found that the wheels had come from 42-year-old Kansas truck driver Adam Chestnut’s Peterbilt semi, after the tractor-trailer lost one of the axle’s dual tires. The tires struck Gardner’s truck cab after crossing the road’s median, and it’s unclear if Chestnut was aware that his tires had struck the other truck, as he did not stop at the scene, continuing on to a truck stop where he was later found.
At this time, no charges have been filed, as the investigation is ongoing. Assisting at the scene and in the investigation were the Lake Township Police and Fire Departments, the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Wood County Coroner’s Office.
