With the Port Huron Police and St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department both adding canine members to their staff, one could say law enforcement in the Blue Water Area has gone to the dogs.
Titan, a rescued 11-week-old Golden-labradoodle, joined the Port Huron Police Department on Monday, January 30, to be the department’s first therapy dog.
According to a statement on the department’s Facebook page, Titan has about a year of training to accomplish before he’s certified as a therapy dog, but once he is trained, his work across the department will begin immediately. In addition to public appearances, such as interviews or public events, he will be at the department to support staff, officers and “anyone that may be here, especially when we do debriefings on large or difficult incidents.” You can see Titan online on the department’s Facebook page, though Titan already has his own at “Titan the PHPD therapy dog.”
Meanwhile, Brock, an almost two-year-old German Shepherd, finished his first shift with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office this past Monday (February 6), being paired with Deputy Sean Egan, a first-time K-9 handler, for both care and work. As opposed to Titan, Brock’s job entails tracking and detecting items like illegal narcotics, and he has already completed training, including five weeks with Deputy Egan before beginning his service on Monday.
Brock, who the St. Clair Sheriff’s Office paid $9,000 for, is currently the department’s only dog, with his predecessor having retired this past December after working for six years starting in 2016.
