Deckerville school board hires MASB to conduct superintendent search

Almost a month after superintendent Michael Hugan announced his plans to resign in June, Deckerville’s Board of Education held a special meeting Monday night to review next steps.

With outside firms usually brought in to assist such an important search, the board interviewed and reviewed two possible agencies, the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and the Michigan Leadership Institute (MLI), and their proposals on February 13.

Ultimately, the board hired MASB to conduct the search.

Current superintendent Michael Hugan started in the district in July of 2017 and will be finishing up his six-year tenure at Deckerville on June 30. Hugan formerly served as principal at Harbor Beach High School for six years, and just this past December had been rated as “Highly Effective” by the Deckerville Board of Education for his performance in the superintendent position.

While it’s unclear what his next plans are, Hugan had interviewed last April for two different superintendent positions: one at Harrison Community Schools, and the other at Brandon Schools in Ortonville.
