Port Huron Police are still investigating a suspicious incident and death that occurred Sunday morning in the 1300 block of 17th Street.
Police were called to the scene around 1:45 a.m. on February 26 with reports of an assault involving a firearm taking place. Police Chief Brian Kerrigan told the Times Herald that two men had reportedly fled the house, but left someone armed and inside.
When officers were unable to get the subject to respond to their calls to come out of the house, the department’s Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Unit, and Criminal Investigative Division were called in to assist patrol officers. After surrounding the residence and attempting to contact the subject for several hours with no answer, police made entry into the home shortly before 8:00 a.m., finding a 26-year-old St. Clair County man dead under “suspicious” circumstances.
The Michigan State Police Crime Lab assisted authorities in collecting evidence, with the Port Huron Police’s Major Crimes Unit and Criminal Investigative Division interviewing people and running down tips.
Ultimately, a person of interest was lodged at the St. Clair County Intervention Center, with the prosecutor’s office to review the case on Monday. Chief Kerrigan told the Times Herald that the person is one of the two men that fled the home, with both men cooperating after being located.
With the St. Clair County Medical Examiner performing the autopsy soon, the investigation remains ongoing.
