41-year-old Columbiaville man Jeffrey Stephen Evans is being held on a $5 million bond after Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark Reene authorized nine felony counts, including open murder, against him  in the ongoing Vassar Township murder case.

The victim, 41-year-old Shawn Maxwell of Redford, had been shot several times last Wednesday, March 1, dying before police arrived at his home. The next afternoon, Michigan State Police issued a public BOLO (be on the lookout)  notice for Evans, later crediting the public’s help for his apprehension at 7:30 p.m. that Thursday night.

Prosecutor Reene authorized the charges on Saturday, March 4, though he did not specify what the other eight charges were. An open murder charge means that Reene will be leaving it up to the jury to decide if Evans should be charged with first or second degree murder, with a first-degree conviction carrying a mandatory life sentence.

Anyone with further information about Evans that could be of assistance to their investigation are encouraged to contact the case’s lead investigators at (989) 673-2156.
