More details have emerged about the nine charges a 41-year-old Lapeer County man faces for his alleged part in last Wednesday’s murder of a Macomb County man in Vassar Township.
Jeffery S. Evans of Columbiaville was formally arraigned this past Monday, March 6 on nine felony charges including open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of assaulting or resisting police, four counts of felony firearm and one count of third-degree killing or torturing an animal.
The last charge is related to the recent revelation that Evans had also killed the cat of 41-year-old Shawn Maxwell, who had been staying alone at a relative’s Vassar Township home at the time of the murder. Police were called to the Tuscola County cottage around 11:00 p.m. on March 1, finding Maxwell dead after being shot several times.
The next afternoon, Michigan State Police issued a public BOLO (be on the lookout)  notice for Evans, later crediting the public’s help for his apprehension at 7:30 p.m. on March 2.
Evans appeared before Tuscola County Magistrate Joseph Van Auken with his lawyer Bernard Jocuns and is scheduled to appear again on Wednesday, March 22 for a preliminary examination. He is still being held on a $5 million bond.
