After several complications including not having enough current planning commission members to hold quorum, the Deckerville Village Council was able to hold their public hearing on Monday, March 13, concerning an amendment to an existing ordinance that prohibits marijuana establishments in town. Andy Watts and Phil Nichol were appointed to the commission prior to yesterday’s meeting, which saw few citizens in attendance and no one speaking during public comment. The ordinance was approved by the planning commission for recommendation to the council on the whole.
The ordinance would allow for businesses such as marijuana retailers to set up shop in the town’s Commercial 1 or Commercial 2 districts, with Commercial 2 districts being able to house Marihuana Safety Compliance facilities. No marihuana businesses will be allowed in residential districts. Meanwhile, growers and processors in the business would only be allowed in the industrial district. While the ordinance has been recommended, it will need to wait until their next meeting to be voted on.
Also at Wednesday night’s general council meeting, the Deckerville council discussed police phone upgrades, budget amendments for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, and received the February reports from the city police, fire and treasury department. The council will meet again on April 10 at 7:00 p.m., with the next planning commission meeting on Wednesday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m
