An early morning call yesterday, April 23, summoned Port Hope firefighters to a Rubicon Township home in flames.
Huron Central Dispatch received the call about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, reporting a home ablaze on Filion Road, east of Finkel Road. Once firefighters were on scene and battling the blaze, they found a badly burned individual deceased in the residence.
An investigation was initiated by the Huron County Sheriff’s office with the assistance of the Port Hope Fire Department, the Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office and a Michigan State Police fire investigator. Because of the extent of the burns to the victim, identification of this person is not positive but it is believed to be the 51-year-old homeowner Roger S. Hartz.
An autopsy is being planned for Tuesday. The investigation will continue, with no further information at this time.
