Capac Community Schools dismissed classes early and cancelled all evening activities last Wednesday, April 26, after a loaded magazine clip was found on Capac Elementary School’s playground.
District Superintendent Jeff Terpenning told the Tri-City Times that the school was briefly placed on lockdown after a first-grade student brought the clip to a playground aide during morning recess, having found it on the ground. After receiving the clip from the playground aide, the elementary school principal notified both the superintendent and a Capac Police Department school resource officer.
Following a brief lockdown, the decision to release all schools early was made around 11:00 a.m., with students officially being released for home around 11:45 a.m.
Following dismissal, a thorough search was conducted of the elementary school campus, a follow-up to an earlier search of the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, lockers and backpacks, as only younger grades had access to the playground prior to that morning’s discovery. Despite the extensive searches and several hours spent reviewing school surveillance footage, Terpenning says that nothing suspicious was found, let alone a weapon for the loaded clip to belong to.
Classes and after-school activities resumed last Thursday as normal.
