Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson reports that a single-vehicle crash that occurred this morning a half mile west of Bad Axe Road claimed the life of a Bingham Township woman.

Around 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, a passerby reported to Huron Central Dispatch that he had come across a damaged vehicle in a ditch with a victim in it, on Popple Road near Bad Axe Road in Bingham Township.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency personnel responded to find a 2016 Ford Escape in the south ditch, with it apparent that it had made impact with a large ditch culvert. Its lone occupant female driver unfortunately was found deceased in it. Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was westbound when it drifted across the road and into the south ditch before continuing west until hitting the culvert.

At this time it is unknown when the crash actually took place because the ditch was deep enough to make the vehicle hard to see. It is also unknown whether the driver may have had a medical issue take place, which may have caused the crash. The victim was identified as Janice J. Becking, age 83. She lived in Bingham Township with a Bad Axe address.

The Huron County Medical Examiner’s office has ordered an autopsy to take place soon.

Accident investigators from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office responded to process the scene. Agencies assisting were the Bingham Fire Department, Central Huron Ambulance Service and an investigator from the Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office.

This investigation will continue.
