With elementary principal Matthew Connelly already in his role as interim superintendent ahead of the July 1 start of his regular superintendent duties, the Deckerville School Board of Education hopes to hire the next principal and several others during Monday night’s board meeting.

The June 26 meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library, will see the board go into closed session about personnel issues prior to a school budget hearing with the school’s business manager Marsha Taylor. In addition to hiring a new elementary principal, the board also hopes to fill four teaching positions and extend the contracts for the transportation supervisor and bus maintenance.

The board will also be renewing the district’s participation in MHSAA for the 2023-2024 school year, ahead of the Big Thumb Conference’s start in the 2024-25 academic year. The Deckerville board will be meeting again on Monday, July 24 for the first board meeting of the 2023- 2024 school year.

Sandusky Schools Board of Education will also be meeting tonight at 7:30, with the plan to approve almost 20 staff members for the next rung up in their probationary journey. In Michigan, teachers need to complete five “probationary” years successfully with a school district before being offered a continuing contract for their position, with the many non-tenured district teachers rated as effective or highly effective for their 2022-2023 job performance.

Meanwhile, with the Finance Committee’s support, the board plans to approve the contracts of nine non-union employees, including Sandusky Elementary Principal Louis Williams and Business Director Kendra Messing.

The board also hopes to give final approval for the past school year’s budget and the initial approval for the upcoming year’s budget. The board will be meeting again on July 10 for their regular meeting, with superintendent candidate interviews scheduled for July 17 and 18.
