Area communities prepare for Independence Day celebrations

As the Fourth of July falls on a Tuesday this year, many towns around the Thumb plan to celebrate Independence Day on July 1st with the traditional parades and festivals the local communities have come to look forward to.
On Saturday, July 1, Lexington will be holding its Independence Day Parade at 11:00 a.m., with down the road neighbor Port Sanilac having their parade at 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, both Port Hope and Cass City will be holding weekend festivals to celebrate the holiday, with Port Hope’s Fourth of July Festival running from Friday, June 30 to Sunday, July 2, and Cass City’s Independence Day Fest happening from Thursday, June 29 to Saturday, July 1.
Port Hope’s Festival features activities at the Brinker Museum and the town’s Activity Center, with festivities starting off with an antique tractor show and a truck/tractor pull on Friday. Saturday features a craft fair and outdoor flea market at the museum, with indoor and outdoor museum displays also to be seen, with admission to the craft fair/flea market being $5. In addition to live music throughout the day, the festival will feature fireworks on Saturday and the parade on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Cass City’s festival starts off with Cass City’s Got Talent from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Friday sees a craft show, cornhole tournament and classic car show on the agenda. On Saturday, kids can enjoy a petting zoo and inflatables, with the grand parade held at 10:30 a.m. and fireworks at dusk.
