Michigan State Police say that an arrest in Tuscola County went horribly awry yesterday when the suspect took his own life rather than being taken into custody.
Around noon on Thursday, July 13, officers with the Michigan State Police arrived at a home in the 8000 block of Birch Run Road in Arbela Township with a felony arrest warrant related to several counts of criminal sexual conduct with a juvenile victim.
They also had search warrants they planned to serve, with extra precautions, like the use of an armored vehicle, being taken as the man is alleged to have made threatening statements before. However, as officers approached the home, the 57-year-old man went onto his back porch and shot himself, Troopers hearing the shot.
While it is not clear what the next steps in the investigation will be, state police urged citizens to reach out for help if they’re having thoughts of suicide, with the state’s suicide and crisis helpline accessible by dialing 988.
