Despite plans to hold his pretrial hearing today, the Carsonville man charged in relation to a reckless car chase earlier this month instead had the proceedings adjourned to a later date, having obtained a new lawyer over the weekend.
Kevin Bret Monzo, age 35 of Carsonville, is charged with six misdemeanor charges, including two counts of assault and battery, as well as one count of reckless driving. His first pretrial conference was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Monday morning, but it was instead adjourned to give his new lawyer time to review the case, which stems from Monzo’s actions on July 4.
Around 2:00 a.m. on July 4, Sanilac County Central Dispatch received a call from a driver of a vehicle stating that he was run off the road by another vehicle. Investigators found there had been a high speed chase starting on Washington Road and a collision occurring in Carsonville. Not only that, but the contact between the two vehicles sent the chased vehicle off the roadway and into a yard. This caused damage to a trailer and two yards near the west limits of Carsonville, with the vehicles’ occupants confronting each other after the crash.
While it was reported by those in the neighborhood that there were shots fired during the confrontation, it has not been confirmed by law enforcement if there was gunfire at any point.
Monzo was arraigned on Wednesday, July 5, a day after the incident. In addition to the assault and driving charges, Monzo was also charged in relation to the property damage, facing one charge of malicious destruction of trees, shrubs, etc. less than $200 and another charge for malicious destruction of property less than $200.
He will return to court for his pretrial on Monday, August 7, with attorney Richard William Schaaf representing him.
