Port Huron Police Chief Brian Kerrigan is asking the Blue Water Area to stay extra vigilant due to increased thefts from vehicles and stolen vehicles. Over the last two weeks, the Port Huron Police Department Road Patrol, Detective Bureau, Port Huron Major Crimes Unit, and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department have made several arrests relating to this crime surge.
On Thursday, August 10, the Port Huron Police Department responded to the 2100 block of Willow Street for suspicious subjects. Officers located two individuals who immediately took off running. A 39-year-old male was captured and arrested. Officers were able to link this subject to several other larceny from auto complaints in the north end of Port Huron.
On Thursday, August 17, members of the Port Huron Police Department developed information on the whereabouts of a stolen vehicle taken from the City of Port Huron. The Port Huron Major Crime Unit located the stolen vehicle at the corner of 7 Mile and Outer Drive in the City of Detroit. A 17-year-old male and a 19- year-old male were arrested for possession of the stolen vehicle. Investigators were able to link these subjects to two additional stolen vehicles taken within Saint Clair County.
On Saturday, August 19, the Port Huron Police Department responded to a call of a vehicle alarm going off in the 800 block of Harker Street. When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old male inside a vehicle. As the officers approached, this subject briefly fled; however, he was caught and taken into custody. Officers located evidence on the juvenile’s person linking him to several other larceny from auto complaints.
“We must remain vigilant and work together to ensure the safety and security of our neighborhoods,” Chief Kerrigan said in a press release, going on to provide the following tips:

  • Lock It Up: Always remember to lock your vehicles, even if you are only stepping away for a brief moment. This simple action can deter opportunistic thieves. Almost all of the recent incidents in our area involved the vehicle being left unlocked.
  • Hide Valuables: Avoid leaving valuable items or packages visible inside your car. Thieves are often enticed by easily accessible belongings. Take them with you when you leave your vehicle.
  • Park Smart: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit areas, preferably near surveillance cameras or within the view of your home or a busy establishment. This added visibility can discourage potential criminals.
  • Install Security Measures: Consider installing motion-sensor lights or a vehicle alarm system to further fortify your car’s security. Even visible signs of security measures can act as a deterrent.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you witness any suspicious behavior or notice unfamiliar individuals loitering around vehicles, please contact law enforcement immediately. Your vigilance can help prevent further incidents.
  • Community Watch: Let’s look out for one another! By building a strong sense of community, we can collectively keep an eye on each other’s properties and promptly report any concerning activities.
