Detectives from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Third District Special Investigation Section are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 5959 Scotch Road in Vassar around 11:00 p.m. on Monday, August 28.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Vassar Police were dispatched to the area in response to a 911 call reporting a traffic crash. Upon arrival, the officer contacted the lone occupant of a crashed vehicle.
The driver, a 30-year-old Vassar man, failed to comply with the responding officer’s commands and produced a firearm, threatening the officer. The officer discharged his firearm in response, shooting the man. The man sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the full report will be forwarded to the Tuscola County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Per Vassar Police department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
