The Huron County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to stay safe this Labor Day weekend.
If you plan on going out on the water, it is important that boats be equipped with the required safety equipment and are in working condition, along with observing all state and federal boating laws.
A properly fitting life jacket is critical and under no circumstances should anyone be on the water without one. The Huron County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Village of Port Austin and the Port Austin Fire Department to provide loaner life jackets. These jackets are available at the Bird Creek Beach. The Caseville Harbor has also created its own life jacket loaner station, which is located near the harbor’s launch ramp.
Residents are also urged to carry a cellular phone in some type of waterproof container and to always let someone on shore know where you’re going and when you’re planning to return. Even though its summer, some nearshore surface water temperatures have already cooled and long-term exposure could result in hypothermia.
They further ask that people be respectful of property owners and their privacy rights. Improper use of fireworks around this time has disrupted neighborhoods, causing serious injuries.
In addition, drivers should be on the lookout for motorcyclists sharing the roadway. Their small size can make them difficult to see, so providing them with enough following distance is crucial for protecting everyone.
