In addition to appointing seven men to two committees, the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners also heard an update from District 3 Commissioner Gary Heberling about the flags and plaques that are put out on the courthouse lawn to honor county military veterans.
The items, which are displayed about six times a year, have been increasing in number as interest from VFW families did, but Heberling noted at Tuesday’s meeting that not only are they running out of space on the courthouse lawn to display the flags and plaques, but also storage space.
After discussing the issue last week with Sandusky Community Schools Key Club sponsor Erin Carlson and new high school principal Ryan Palmer, as well as VFW representatives, Heberling announced to the board that the plans would be to initiate a cut off on the amount of flags accepted for display, with no clear timeline for that process mentioned, aside from Heberling saying it’d be possibly in the next few months.
In addition, plans are being made to add two 12×12 pillars at the ends of the monument constructed three years ago, so that the current plaque names can be etched into the pillars and the plaques can be returned to the VFW and their families to keep. The fundraising efforts for these pillars will be headed up by Sandusky’s Key Club students.
In addition to this update, the commissioners voted to appoint Douglas  Gorringe, Timothy Juhl, Steve Scribner and Joel Wyatt to the county’s airport zoning board of appeals, with Jeff Alexander, Scott Kenny and John Knoerr also appointed to the planning commissions. The appointments, several of them reappointments, will end on September 1, 2026.
