Ubly man pleads guilty to three counts from July 2022 sex sting

With his trial due to start yesterday morning, a Huron County man instead chose to plead guilty to three counts related to a July 2022 human trafficking sting led by Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson.

Jeremy John Susalla, 41, of Ubly, pleaded guilty Tuesday to child sexually abusive material, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison; using a computer to commit a crime, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison; and, accosting a child for immoral purposes, a felony punishable by up to 4 years in prison.

Susalla was one of three men arrested during a 10-hour sting carried out July 12, 2022 by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Offices, the Sanilac County Drug Task Force and the Bad Axe Police Department. The Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team (GHOST), a division of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, also provided assistance, organizing and leading the operation as a kind of training for local agencies.

Susalla, for his part, had been texting who he believed was a 15-year-old girl, requesting sex and offering a $250 payment. When he arrived at the sting location, he discovered his rendezvous was actually with an undercover officer, and he was arrested.

Susalla will be sentenced at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2023, before the Huron County Circuit Court Judge Gerald Prill.
