In addition to this week being School Bus Safety Week, the Michigan State Police is also reminding the community that this is National Teen Driver Safety Week.
Michigan State Police and other state agencies are urging parents to talk to your teen about distracted driving, as parents often have more influence over their teens than they imagine. A national survey found that teens who say their parents set rules and support them are half as likely to crash as teens who say their parents are not as involved.
Parents can get more involved by supervising your child’s driving and tracking their driving via mobile apps, setting driving rules and limits, and talking to your child about distracted driving.
Officials also recommend families choose vehicles for safety and not image. Teens should drive vehicles that reduce their chances of being in a crash and offer protection in case they do crash, with mid-sized to large sedans being the preferable choice. Authorities recommend avoiding cars with performance images that encourage speeding.
They also encourage adults to set a good example for their teen drivers by following the rules of the road and always practicing safe driving.
