No firefighters or civilians were injured during a two-alarm fire in Lapeer County’s Oregon Township on Monday morning.
The City of Lapeer’s Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the 3500 block of Chesterfield Drive in Oregon Township around 7:10 a.m. on October 23, with the caller reporting the living room was on fire and evacuation of the home was already underway. Arriving less than 10 minutes later, crews reported to see flames and smoke from the single-story, multi-family, duplex style home, with mutual aid units brought in.
Personnel at the scene were able to quickly contain the fire to the duplex where the blaze began, with the remaining duplex sustaining no visible damage. The area firefighters had been dispatched to had no fire hydrants, requiring multiple water tenders to shuttle water from a nearby hydrant at Oregon and Millville Roads. The duplex housed four adults, two children and three dogs, with all able to escape without injury. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The origin and cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire crews from Elba Township, Columbiaville and Deerfield Township assisted at the scene, with further assistance from Medstar Ambulance, the Michigan State Police, the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office and Central Dispatch.
