A Tuscola County Sheriff’s deputy was bit by a dog and punched in the face while responding to an early Monday morning domestic fight.
Shortly after 3:00 a.m. this morning, October 30, deputies responded to an Arbela Township home after a child called reporting adults fighting. There was also a report at the home of a woman claiming her ankle was broken.
When deputies arrived at the home on Evelyn Drive, they were immediately confronted by a yelling, aggressive man. When attempting to subdue the man, one of the deputies was punched in the face, the blow breaking his glasses. With officers attempting to use a taser several times on the man, the man in response sicced one of his dogs on the officers, with the punched deputy also being bitten by the animal.
Shortly after, another Tuscola County deputy arrived, with a MSP trooper and Genesee County deputy also responding as backup. The man was finally subdued, being handcuffed behind his back as he was taken into custody. However, the man still resisted, refusing to walk and forcing officers to carry him to the patrol car.
Once in the patrol car’s backseat, the suspect was able to move his handcuffs from the back to the front, a feat he achieved before attempting to escape via the opening between the back and front seat of the car. Officers standing near the patrol car saw the man attempt to crawl through the opening, immediately subduing him again and readjusting his handcuffs again.
The 36-year-old man is lodged at the Tuscola County Jail as he awaits arraignment on a third offense of domestic violence and resisting and obstructing police. The assaulted deputy sought treatment at a local hospital.
