With Michigan’s election day quickly approaching, those part of the Thumb area will be heading to the polls to vote on various proposals, millages, and the recall of candidates.

Residents of Huron County will be voting on two proposals this year: one for Bad Axe and one for Port Austin.

Bad Axe voters will consider a bond proposal regarding Bad Axe Public Schools. According to the proposal, the city would borrow $6,700,000 for the remodeling, furnishing, and equipping of school buildings. These funds would be collected via the issuing of general obligation unlimited tax bonds. Also covered under this amount would include the development and preparation of the school’s athletic fields, facilities, playgrounds, sidewalks/driveways, and related sites.

The estimated millage for 2024 would be 1.00 mills (or $1.00 on each $1,000 of taxable value), an increase of 0 from last year’s levy.

In addition, Port Austin voters are being asked to consider an extension of .33 mills (or $0.33 on each $1,000 of taxable value) to a previous increase in tax limitations on general ad valorem taxes. This extension would be from 2023 to 2027 with an estimated $45,000 to be raised in the first year for police purposes.
