A Lapeer County man was hit and killed last Friday while attempting to check his truck’s tire near the Elba Road exit ramp on westbound I-69.
Paul Curzydlo, age 68 of Almont, had pulled over onto the I-69 shoulder on Friday, November 3, to check the tires on his Ford F-150 truck when he was struck just before 3:00 p.m. by an 18-year-old driver. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office reports that the accident occurred near the fog line of the exit ramp’s lane, with Curzydlo pulled over onto the paved shoulder of the highway.
The 18-year-old driver was not harmed, nor was Curzydlo’s wife, who was riding with him in the truck at the time. She later told police that her husband had been looking into a check tire light that had come on during their drive.
The investigation saw the Elba Road exit ramp closed for about two hours, with I-69’s westbound traffic restricted to one lane. Assisting the sheriff’s office at the scene were Michigan State Police, Lapeer County EMS, Lapeer County’s Reconstruction Team, and the sheriff’s victim’s service unit.
Neither drugs or alcohol are believed to be involved in the accident, with police asking anyone who witnessed or otherwise have information about the incident to contact Detective Sergeant Jason Parks at 810-656-1015.
