Hunting blind fire claims life of Argyle Township man

A portable propane heater is believed to have been the cause of a fatal hunting blind fire Wednesday morning in Argyle Township. Sanilac County Central Dispatch received a call around 10:35 a.m. Wednesday from a male reporting he had found his grandfather severely burned and possibly deceased near his hunting blind. Deputies from the Sanilac County Sheriff Department, along with the Argyle Fire Department, were dispatched to the hunting blind, located in the 4600 block of Freiburger Road in Sanilac County’s Argyle Township.
First responders learned that the grandson of the 75-year old victim was in the woods hunting, when he heard a ‘popping’ sound coming from the direction of his grandfather’s hunting blind—initially thinking the sound was his grandfather shooting at a deer. The grandson reported seeing smoke coming from the area and headed toward the blind to investigate, where he found his grandfather severely burned and deceased just outside of his blind.
The case remains under investigation. The Sandusky Police Department assisted at the scene.
