Classes resumed this morning at Port Huron High School, though with extra police presence, following yesterday’s early dismissal and lockdown in response to a social media threat.
With several threats reported Wednesday, November 15, and at least one appearing legitimate, school administration put students and staff in a soft lockdown around 10:00 a.m. as investigation began and assistance from local police and sheriff’s departments was requested. Despite a large police presence at the school, with the Port Huron Police and St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office being brought in to assist the school’s resource officers, officials made it clear that there was no active threat, with officers ultimately assisting with the lockdown, securing the building and transitioning to an early dismissal.
With an official police investigation now launched, the posts removed and police ultimately believing the threat wasn’t credible, school officials resumed classes Thursday, albeit with more police in and around the school than usual.
Principal Michael Palmer noted that whether the posts were intended to be jokes, “words matter and we take safety very seriously,” adding that there will be severe consequences for those who post threats.
