With about 11 cases found across Port Huron City and township, as well as in the city of St. Clair, the St. Clair County Animal Control is urging the community to vaccinate their dogs against Canine Parvovirus.
Seeing a rise of cases in the past two weeks across all ages, the animal control director, Melissa Miller, reminds the public that Parvovirus is highly contagious but preventable, and causes severe gastrointestinal illness in unvaccinated dogs. Dogs can pass the virus among themselves via direct contact or feces, with dogs suffering from the condition dealing with severe and bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, weakness, dehydration and not eating/drinking.
If your dog is not updated on their vaccines, Miller recommends avoiding doggie daycares, boarding situations, going to dog parks, and other situations where your pup could meet an unvaccinated dog, during this highly contagious time.
