Missing Elkton woman found dead in California two weeks after disappearance

The search for a missing Huron County woman in California ended in tragedy last Thursday, with authorities finding her body on a hillside.
Ann Marie Herford, a 66-year-old travel nurse from Elkton, Michigan, was reported missing after not showing up for work at Adventist Health in Sonora, CA. She was last seen on November 12, parking her car at a trailhead of the Arnold Rim Trail System, and was reported missing two days later. With over 20 organizations and law enforcement agencies contributing to the search, over 3,500 hours were put into search efforts since her vehicle was found November 15.
On Thursday, November 30, after canvassing an extremely steep and dense section of the search area, Calaveras County Sheriff deputies and search volunteers located Herford’s body on a hill. She was found north of where her vehicle was parked and not within the trail system she’d been hiking. Due to the terrain and slope angle, Herford required extrication by California Highway Patrol aircraft.
While sheriff’s detectives will continue to review all aspects of Anne Marie’s disappearance, the investigation currently indicates that her tragic death is not suspicious.
