Huron County authorities found more than they bargained for during a Wednesday arrest of a Bay Port man.
According to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, 34-year-old John P. Nugent Jr. was wanted on several charges, including felony assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, prior to his arrest last Wednesday. Nugent had been evading police since November 29, 2023, when he allegedly committed the assault, with authorities also wanting Nugent on other charges such as stalking, domestic violence, and reckless driving.
When the Huron County Sheriff’s Office was informed that Nugent had returned to his McKinley Township home on Wednesday, January 3, they prepared an arrest warrant covering the felony charge, two misdemeanors and two charges for failing to appear in court.
After a threat to kick the door in should he not surrender himself, authorities took the man into custody and found methamphetamine on his person. Another warrant and further investigation later, Huron County deputies searched the home the following morning. More methamphetamine was found and further items, such as computers and cell phones, were seized.
Nugent was arraigned on Thursday, January 4, following the search and was ordered to be held on a $120,000 cash bond.
Agencies that assisted the Huron County Sheriff’s Department in the case included the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit and the Fairhaven Township Police.
