Thumb suffers power outages from Friday night’s storm

Some parts of Michigan’s Thumb are still without power after Friday’s storm, with less than 500 customers across Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac, St. Clair and Tuscola counties waiting for DTE to restore the utility.
It’s a massive improvement compared to Friday’s outage totals, with the National Weather service noting that over 100,000 customers were without power at the peak of the storm. With high winds and heavy, wet snow that affected power services, both utility crews and road commission crews were out across the counties to address the storm’s complications.
Lapeer and Sanilac counties suffered the most outages during the weekend, with Lapeer County averaging upwards of 3,000 customers dealing with outages.
Meanwhile, almost 1,900 DTE customers in Sanilac County were without power, with a significant portion of those outages in Sandusky.  DTE crews began work in the southwest part of Sandusky around 10:00 p.m. Friday, removing trees from lines and working on the system. Power was restored to most of the town before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 13.
Of the thumb counties, Tuscola was affected the least, with less than 300 customers dealing with the weekend power outages, in comparison to the almost 1,000 customers in Huron County.
