With key positions like county sheriff and county prosecuting attorney up for election in 2024, the first development of the local races came today as current Sanilac County prosecuting attorney announced that she will not be seeking re-election in the fall.

In her statement to local media on Wednesday, prosecutor Brenda Sanford thanked Sanilac County citizens for electing her to the role in 2020.

Beginning her career under former county prosecutor James Young, Sanford has spent the past 26 years with the prosecutor’s office, expressing immense pride in her work. Still, with her term to end two months shy of her 65th birthday, Sanford wishes to move forward and to the next chapter of her life, giving that as her main reason for not seeking re-election.

With no one announcing their candidacy for the position yet, it is unclear who could be chosen for the role come the November 2024 election.
