Two people were arrested early Sunday morning after authorities were called to the defunct Tuscola County Re-Entry Prison Facility.
Dispatched after a report of a suspicious vehicle, the Caro Police Department and Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office responded shortly after 4:15 a.m. to the Chambers Road address. The address had previously been reported as the site of some larcenies during the site’s demolishing, with the contractor handling the demolition and scrap item removal reporting those thefts.
Upon arrival at the site, deputies found a 37-year-old Mt. Morris woman and a pitbull dog in the reported pickup truck parked at the facility. A search inside the facility found a 38-year-old Mt. Morris man removing scrap from the building. Both subjects were detained and arrested after an investigation, with the dog turned over to animal control for safekeeping.
After being transported to the jail, the two were searched and methamphetamine was found on the woman, with a count of drug possession added to the woman’s charges. Both were charged with larceny in a building. Authorities believe more subjects are involved, with the investigation continuing for the Sheriff’s Office.
The Michigan State Police is also investigating, as they have also been taking theft reports concerning the defunct facility.
