Marlette officials to draft ordinance regulating potential marijuana businesses in city

marlette-2-2

Marlette officials will soon be exploring the possibility of bringing licensed and regulated marijuana businesses to the city. At their meeting Monday night, city council members discussed a motion from council member Chris Kopacz to begin the process of developing an ordinance that would create guidelines for allowing a limited number of marijuana grow facilities and dispensaries in Marlette.
Kopacz stated that if the city were to offer licenses for two grow facilities and two dispensaries, it would generate over $400,000 a year in additional funds for the city to use as it sees fit.
Council members voted unanimously to move forward with the motion, reiterating that it’s just the first step in a months-long process that involves hearing input from community members and considering several factors.
The issue now goes to Marlette’s planning commission, which will be tasked with formulating an ordinance that sets guidelines for prospective marijuana businesses in the city. The ordinance would then go back to city council, who could then make changes to it and send it back to the planning commission, or pass it as is.
In other business Monday, Marlette City Manager Ryan Rudzis stated that the repairs and upgrades to the city’s pool are almost complete, with the new lining set to be installed later this month. The pool has a tentative opening date of June 15th.
The Marlette City Council meets again on Monday, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m. at Marlette City Hall.
